Scripps Canyon changes everything here, but not uniformly

Scripps Canyon, part of the La Jolla submarine canyon system just offshore, is the real reason Blacks gets a reputation for power — but the effect isn't simple amplification everywhere nearby. Oceanographers who've studied it describe the canyon as producing smaller waves in the water directly shoreward of the canyon head, while the swell energy it deflects builds noticeably bigger waves north of that point, which is where Blacks itself sits.

The access is the real filter

There's no parking lot at the beach itself. Getting down means a genuinely steep, sometimes crumbling cliff trail, which keeps crowds meaningfully lower than a wave this good would otherwise draw in San Diego.
