Why the two numbers matter
Wetsuit thickness is usually listed as two numbers, like 4/3 or 5/4. The first is the thickness in millimeters around the torso, where warmth matters most. The second is the thickness around the arms and shoulders, kept thinner so you can still paddle without excessive drag. A thicker suit traps more warmth but costs you flexibility — which is why picking too thick a suit for the conditions can hurt your surfing as much as picking too thin a suit hurts your comfort.
Boots and hoods aren't optional past a certain point
Hands, feet, and head lose heat fastest, and a wetsuit alone doesn't cover any of them. A 3/2 that's perfect for a Florida or SoCal summer will be genuinely dangerous — not just uncomfortable — in Northern California or Pacific Northwest water most of the year.
