One is weak, disorganized chop. The other can be genuinely powerful, well-shaped surf. The number that explains the difference is period, and it's worth understanding in more depth than a quick mention.
What period actually measures
Swell period is the time, in seconds, between one wave crest and the next as they pass a fixed point — like a buoy. It sounds like a small technical detail, but it's actually a direct readout of how the wave was formed and how much energy it's carrying beneath the surface.
Why longer period means more power
A longer period means each wave is carrying energy through a deeper column of water, not just at the surface. That extra depth of moving water is what gives a long-period swell its power once it reaches shallow water and starts to break — there's simply more energy behind it than a short-period wave of the same visible height.
This is also why experienced surfers often describe a long-period swell as "breaking bigger than the forecast" — the buoy height reading doesn't fully capture how much that energy amplifies once it hits shallow water near shore.
Why period tells you where the storm was
Period isn't a random property — it's tied directly to distance. A storm generates a chaotic mix of wave periods, but as that energy travels away from the storm, longer-period waves move faster than shorter-period ones and gradually separate out ahead of them. A swell arriving with a long, clean period at your coast is a signal that it traveled a long way to get there — the shorter, messier windswell created alongside it has already fallen behind or dispersed.
Why this matters more at some spots than others
Spots that rely on a real wrap or refraction — points and reefs positioned to catch swell arriving at an angle — often need a genuinely long period to work well, since a short-period swell tends to lose too much energy bending around a point or headland to arrive with much left. A direct-facing beach break is generally more forgiving of shorter periods, since the swell doesn't need to bend as far to reach it.
