How Long Does a Good Swell Actually Last Before It Fades?

A swell doesn't switch off. It decays gradually, and the shape of that decline — not just the peak — determines how many good sessions you actually get out of it.

Why the fastest waves arrive first

Within a single storm-generated swell, the longest-period waves travel fastest and arrive first, followed by progressively shorter-period, weaker waves as the swell continues. That means a swell's first day is often its most powerful, and it tends to lose energy — not vanish outright — as the following days pass.

A swell doesn't end. It fades, and most of the fading happens faster than people expect.

What actually shortens the window further

The raw swell decay is only part of the story. Wind shifts, tide moving out of a spot's ideal range, and increasing crowd size all compress the practical window of a "good session" to something much shorter than the multi-day life of the swell itself. A swell might technically still be in the water three days after it arrived, while the actual good surfing window at your specific spot closed after the first morning.

Why "the swell's still up" is misleading

Checking a forecast a day or two after a swell arrived and seeing a similar height number doesn't mean the session will be similar. Period has usually dropped, meaning the wave has lost power and organization even if the height reading looks close to what it was on day one.
